Dental Bone Grafts

What are Dental Bone Grafts?

A dental bone graft involves placing a small piece of bone in areas where bone loss has occurred. The procedure may be necessary prior to having dental implants placed or before being fitted for a denture. Bone loss can occur for a variety of reasons, but is most common among patients with advanced periodontal disease. Bone grafting makes use of either synthetic, donor or individual bone material.

Why are Dental Bone Grafts needed?

You may require a bone graft before having another procedure done. Dental implants, in particular, require a solid area of bone to successfully heal. If there is not enough adequate bone in the area where the implant will be placed, it will eventually fail and become loose. To prevent this from happening, a bone graft can be done to create a more structured jaw.

What makes you a good candidate for Dental Bone Grafts?

Bone grafts are beneficial only to patients who are experiencing mild to moderate bone loss. To determine if you have bone loss, simple dental x-rays and imaging can be used. We will examine the x-rays to check for signs of bone loss and whether you would benefit from a bone graft. The procedure is done easily in our office and takes about an hour.

What can you expect with Dental Bone Grafts?

The bone grafting can be done either under local or general anesthetic as per your request. We will create a small incision through the gums and place the bone material in the area where it is needed. Growth factor may be used to help in healing and fusing the bone within the area. Over time, the grafted bone will fuse and bond with surrounding bone, creating more structure and resiliency. You are then ready for other treatment options that are necessary to improve your oral health.

"Every day I look forward to seeing a patient that has been reluctant to come to the dentist. It is very rewarding to be able to give that person the smile they deserve. I do this in hopes that they will share that smile with others."
